Understanding WCAG Contrast Requirements
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define minimum contrast ratios to ensure text is readable for users with visual impairments, including color blindness and low vision.
WCAG Levels
Level AA requires a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Level AAA requires 7:1 for normal text and 4.5:1 for large text. Large text is defined as 18pt (24px) or 14pt (18.67px) bold.
Why Accessibility Matters
Approximately 300 million people worldwide have color vision deficiency, and many more have other visual impairments. Ensuring adequate contrast makes your content accessible to everyone and can also improve readability in challenging viewing conditions like bright sunlight.
